The person behind success
Sri Pranabir Maity s/o Late Radhanath is from a very humble background. Born in a small hamlet of a remote village of a Bengal he emerged as one of the greatest Rosarian of India. He learned farming in his childhood while assisting his father but he always questioned himself as How can it be better and what’s more. In his early youth he settled at Jakpur, near Kharagpur, Medinipur, West Bengal, which is traditionally a floriculture belt and instead of emerging out as a good grower he was in search of answers to his childhood questions. He took up Rose, which is normally flowers of cold area, as his passion and got it acclimatized in this floriculture belt of Bengal, where it was almost unknown. It was never imagined that Rose can be produced and propagated here. He started
collecting different varieties of Rose and producing saplings in non
traditional way resulting in multiplication of production. Each bud of a branch is now utilized to produce a new sapling. He kept on toiling on field and in course he changed the media (rice husk) which produced a magic result, of producing Rose. He didn’t stop there and advanced forward. He started breeding Indian varieties of Rose. Till date he bred more than 50 varieties and some of those are Radhanath, Pranabananda jee, Midnapur dalight, Josh, Subhra Mukharjee etc....
His activities attracted local people and some of them joined him. Over the years JAKPUR and Rose became synonymous and the economics & culture of the area got changed. He has collected more than 3500 varieties of Rose from India and abroad and acquired encyclopedic knowledge in this field. Even when there is not a single flower on the plant he can identify it by looking at its leaf and thorn only for which he is nationally and internationally known to the rosarians. In fact he has grown into a knowledge bank in field. Moreover, his farm is not only visited by the professors and students of Agriculture department of IIT Kharagpur for education, persons of national and international eminence also visit his farm regularly. His knowledge, dedication, passion and love for Rose have made him the highest authority in this field. He is an Institution himself.
